I have been training under Jacqui Carroll and John Nobbs (OZFRANK) since 2005. With them, I found a physical practice that was full of rigour, vigour and serious discipline. The discipline was a drug for me, real structure. It replaced real addictions, toxic behaviour and toxic people. The training is underpinned by a philosophical imperative that matches my own, one that is grounded in spirit.

Coined the NSP, the Nobbs Suzuki Praxis is an eloquent evolution of the Suzuki Method of Actor Training created by preeminent theatre director Suzuki Tadashi . The Nobbs Suzuki Praxis has been crafted by John Nobbs and Jacqui Carroll over the past 25 years and their adaptation blends their shared histories of classical ballet, modern and contemporary dance with Suzuki’s seminal actor training exercises. The key to this practice is the relationship with voice. Presence, voice and self awareness in equal measure.

Through intense personal evaluation over many years, I have begun to unpack the complex layers of development the Ozfrank NSP training provides. Theirs is a holistic practice encompassing all aspects of mind, body, spirit and space. This is self regulation at its finest. The exercises and expert facilitation develop internal and external relationships, activating micro and macro views of self, the cosmos and everything in between. Imagination is balanced carefully with effort. Ego does not last long here. Every breath, every sound and every movement heightens a connected awareness.

I have been teaching the NSP since 2013 in secondary and tertiary institutions, utilising the practice to unpack dramatic cultural texts and political structures with and about Aboriginal people. I use this practice in primary school and early years settings as focus and engagement strategies, working with them to discover their identity, group connection and their connection to country. I use this training with members of the access community, extending self belief and physical acuity.

Ozfrank Theatre literally gave me the space and some critical methods to change my life. As a company we regularly work with film, blending theatrical performance and dance with a touch of dark comedy. With members across the globe, the Ozfrank International Network meets online monthly to discuss practice, innovation and application of the NSP within each individual's direct community.
